The K-8 Aeronautics Internet Textbook
--> Return To Links Page

THIS WEB SITE IS A RARE FIND

The Internet promised to do many things for education. Most of those promises are unfulfilled. Not so, with The K-8 Aeronautics Internet Textbook.

The first thing that strikes you when exploring this site is the strong design motif and a wonderful use of graphics, animation and movies. There's a great deal of substance, yet the designers have laid it out in a clear, intuitive way, making navigation easy.

I particularly enjoyed the animations and found them to be my favorite part of the site.

The site is divided into easy-to-use subject areas. You will find:

Principles of Aeronautics Curriculum Bridges
Lesson Plans Internet Guide
Careers Aeronautics Sign Language Dictionary
Activities Tennis
NASA Tours Scientists and Engineers Guide

Each section is cross-linked which makes walking through the information a snap.

I particularly liked the 'Careers' section which ties a subject of interest with real-world applications.

SITE SNAPSHOT
"The K-8 Aeronautics Internet Textbook " is an electronic multimedia text, teachers' supplement and student workbook designed to be used over the internet in conjunction with the World Wide Web. This "electronic textbook" presents a comprehensive, cohesive study of the science of aeronautics at a level elementary and middle school students and their instructors can easily understand and enjoy. Internet communication media include written text, sign language for the deaf, still pictures, and short video clips.

WHY WE LIKE IT
This web site delivers in a big way. Here's how:
- It sticks to a narrow focus instead of trying to cover too many areas.
- It succeeds at its goal of presenting to its audience, the K-8 age group with graphics, animation, movies, text and user interface appropriate for kids this age.
- It allows the user to select a reading level.
- It offers the option of viewing the information in Spanish, a big plus for bilingual students.
- It's fun to use and explore, a must considering the audience.
- It is interactive and draws kids into the topic. Learning is more effective as an active endeavor rather than a passive exercise.

A companion book from McGraw-Hill Children's Science Books is also available.

BOTTOM LINE
Even if you or your child's interests do not run to Aeronautics, this is one to bookmark. It deals with all aspects of flight - aircraft, as well as animal flight, and even sports equipment like javelins and golf balls. It makes it fun to learn about this subject. We are excited to see the promise of the Internet delivered.
