This movie shows the phases of Venus over one complete cycle. Note that the sun is very close to Venus during both the new and full phases. Also note the large changes in angular size Venus undergoes during its cycle. Both of these observations can only be explained by a heliocentric model. Galileo's discovery of the cycle and his explanation of it helped lead to widespread adoption of Copernicus' heliocentric model of the universe.
